Traffic Skills 101 Course
on Saturday, October 17th
from 8am-5pm.

Traffic Skills 101 is course designed by the League of American Bicyclists taught by local LCI, Marty Shukert. This course is the prerequisite to the League's LCI Certification Course that will be held in the coming months.

Traffic Skills 101 gives cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. The course covers bicycle safety checks, fixing a flat, on-bike skills and crash avoidance techniques and includes a student manual. Recommended for adults and children above age fourteen, this fast-paced, nine-hour course prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling.

The time for the third annual 4th of July Bike-N-Breakfast ride to
Seward is quickly approaching.

The Time : 7:00AM July 4th
The location: Meet at The Mill coffee house in the Haymarket
The Ride: We will ride out to the firehouse in Seward and then back.

This will be a relaxing pace, no hammers allowed. You hammer, you buy
for everyone. We will end up at the firehouse in Seward where they have an
annual free will donation pancake feed. There we will gorge ourselves then
we can hang out, ride back, do whatever. Ride time should be around an hour
and a half to get out there.

Kids will enjoy the bike rodeo that includes an inspection, safety training, and skill training. They'll also get to decorate their bikes and ride in a bike parade.

Adults can learn about bike maintenance with experts from local shop Bike Pedalers and they can get tips for safe and efficient bike commuting.

Everyone will enjoy a full day of racing as the Capitol Criterium returns with pro and semi-pro racing.

Bike-related prizes will be given to kids who complete all of the stations and to those who participate in the parade and race in the kids race.

Two lucky kids will win new bikes. 9-11 Adult races 10-2 events at McPhee Elementary. Also:

Beware of uneven pavement and potholes

We had another great turnout last night for the weekly ride.

Gusty northwest winds sent the group out North on the Rock Island trail and an impromptu tour of the Antelope Valley project.

We hit some of the worst pavement in Lincoln here: and a rider crashed. Kaelly has a possible fractured arm and had to be taken for x-ray's. Thanks to her friend Abby for driving out to pick her up and taking her to Lincare.

We all hope you are o.k. Kaelly and we wish you a speedy recovery.

"I just read that Ron was struck by a car on Sunday just outside of Lincoln. Ron and I go back since I first started riding in Lincoln and I will always remember him as one of the people I aspired to be like. Tough guy, very active, and a true gentleman.

Word from Lincoln is that he broke a few ribs and his hip, but knowing him he'll get through it.

In a surprise move, a UCI committee has voted to ban all non-prescription glasses from its races, a move that could have a multi-million dollar effect on endorsement contracts for pros like Lance Armstrong.

Citing the need to clean up the sport’s image and to attract new viewers, the official statement from the UCI said that it did not intend to allow the sport’s stars “to hide behind dark glasses anymore.” The ban is effective immediately as of April 1, 2009.

Starting at 7:30 am Saturday December 20th and continuing this winter when the temps are low, group stationary bike training rides will take place at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ Gym located at 3245 S 37th St, aka 37th & Sheridan Blvd. Bring your bike, stationary trainer, something to protect the floor from your stand (mat, towel) and some change as a free will for lights. Monsignor Tucker has made this location available. We will have a big screen showing cycling DVDs. You can come as early as 7:00 am to set up, and we will be ending around 9:30 and out by 10:00 am. Feel free to come and go as you please during the session.
The Gym floor needs to be protected. Please remove your shoes if they have cleats. Thanks, and hope to see you there.

CYCLO-CROSS COMES TO LINCOLN THIS WEEKEND

Lincoln, NE - The 2008 Nebraska Cyclo-cross season will come to an exciting conclusion this weekend, November 22-23 at Pioneers Park in Lincoln. The Lincoln CX Weekend presented by Monkey Wrench Cycles and Highgear Bicyce Store of Omaha features a $2000 cash prize list for the weekend as well as the Nebraska USAC Cyclo-cross State Championship, Sunday, November 23.

The two day race weekend will be hosted by the local team, Midwest Wheelmasters.

Preparations for the course at Pioneers are nearly complete and all signs point to another fast circuit for the 2008 edition of the Lincoln CX Weekend.

"Lincoln Parks and Recreation have provided a lot of support prepping the course," says team manager, Troy Krause. "I am confident racers will enjoy the circuit we have prepared. A lot of the old with some great additions."

The 2.5 mile course at Pioneers is one the fastest and most challenging cyclo-cross elements anywhere and includes the infamous "Hooligan Hill." The latter section of the course has become quite the attraction with hundreds of local and regional race fans converging to take in the top-level competition.

The races will be held rain, snow or shine. Registration for both days of racing will be held on-site at Pioneers Park.

Other items to remember:
• Riders must have an annual USAC license to be eligible for State Championship medals on Sunday, November 23.
• Mountain bikes are allowed WITHOUT bar ends.
• No pre-riding prior to race day is allowed at Pioneers Park.

Thank you to the Browns for hosting such a great 'cross race event! Everyone had a wonderful time and the course was twisty, muddy, there were two creek crossings and natural log barriers. Cowbells were involved in the day. The location was wonderful, as was the weather (I was only there on Sunday). Nancy is a fab cook (she made lots of food for everyone!) and host. I bet you'll have even more riders next year (I thought there were a lot this Sunday, actually), since this first time out of the gate was so successful.

Pacelines - How to ride in a group*

The essence of group riding is riding the paceline. It allows cyclists to travel faster with less effort and provides a better social experience. (It is also a foundation of racing.) Pacelines do have some inherent danger and require communication among the riders. But a good paceline is a wonderful thing.

The basic SINGLE paceline is simple. The riders align behind one another to take maximum advantage of the "drag" effect of the cyclists to the front. The cyclist in the front will set the group's pace, when the lead rider decides it is time to change, that rider pulls off to one side and drifts back to the end of the paceline.

The new lead cyclist increases effort SLIGHTLY (just increases the amount of pressure on his pedals) to maintain the group pace. A good paceline is smooth. A good paceline is built on trust. The riders have to be confident that the others in the group will communicate well and ride safely.

Well, it's that time of year again. Time to plan on attending the Thursday Taco Ride in Omaha. With the weather patterns the way they are, the sooner the better or we will be riding in parkas.

So, my thought is that we do it next Thursday (9/25/2008). The only thing that will really need to be worked out would be transportation, so we can decide that when we know who will be attending. I'm hoping to see the same people as last year, plus some new faces.

If you know anyone who you think would like to attend, fill them in on all the details and get them to come along. Send me an email if you are planning on attending and I will get an email chain going with everyone involved. Maybe we can get some of the Omaha people to meet us out there too. That means you Algomaha, and Munson, and Miles, and everyone else...

P.S. The only excuse for not attending will be if you have been run over by a truck. Even then, that would be questionable. ;)

With the sun setting at approx. 7:57pm - rides seem to be getting shorter and shorter. The Wednesday night ride will be moved to 5:45pm starting September 10th. We thank everyone for making it an awesome summer ride. We did hit a new record of 30 riders this year all thanks to you!

Nebraska State Championship Road Race Update

Due to concern about the safety of our Junior riders, race distance, for Juniors only, has been decreased to 2 laps or approximately 26 miles. Junior riders will race in one of the following age categories: 10-12, 13-15, and 16-18. Juniors will race together for the two laps, but separate medals will be awarded for each category.

Also of note, First time racers receive 50% off the entry fee. A discount code is necessary; more information is available on the registration page at sportsbaseonline.com. Please note the discount is for race entry fee only and does not apply to one day licenses. One day licenses must be purchased in order to participate and are also available online.

Online registration closes Friday September 5th at 6:00pm. Day of registration will be available from 7:30-8:30am for an additional $10 and no discounts will be applied.

Labor Day Breakfast Ride...

Wondering if anyone would be up for a fun little ride Monday morning at 7am.

The plan is to leave at the bench and head out to Mahoney. Eat at their wonderful buffet. Head back home. The pace is going to be an easy recovery pace. No laying down the hammer. Just some good times with good people.

Who's up for it?

ADDENDUM: Well, a small crimp was put in the plan. I was hit by a truck today while returning from my ride. My bike is pretty well toast, and my legs and wrists aren't feeling so hot right now. So, I will not be riding. However, I am willing to drive out and meet everyone at the park and provide a ride home for anyone not wanting to ride back. I figure since I am trying to organize it I should go no matter what.

Thanks go to Greg and Justin for coming up with the design and making it possible for us to have posters to distribute and fliers to hand out for the upcoming road race.

Time is drawing near for the Nebraska State Road Race Championship that teamFIRE is hosting. We still need volunteers.

Date: September 6

Time: 7:30-5:00, but if you can only help at certain times, that's fine too.

Location: Branched Oak Lake

Types of volunteer duties: feed station, wheel car drivers, registration table, corner marshals

Bagels will be provided in the morning for the volunteers, as well as sandwiches at lunch. Water will be available all day.

Please ask if you have any questions.
